01 · DEVELOPMENT
EDIE
Edie’s first instinct was to describe shows, and describing is easy. She is learning to explain them — theories that can be tested against an episode, and enough of them survive that we use them.
02 · CASTING
TESS
Tess stopped ranking people and started casting against a format, because nobody is castable in the abstract. She still over-values confidence. We’re working on it, and so is she.
03 · STORY
MAYA
Maya reads a conversation and calls where it is about to turn, before she is allowed to see what happens next. She isn’t better than our producers yet, but she has caught two shifts in testing that the room missed.
04 · TAKES
ARI
Ari watches every attempt at a line and tells us which one to use. Early on he rejected anything with a stumble. He now knows the difference between a take that is messy and a take that is dead.
05 · FRAME
IRIS
Iris grades composition and is the most opinionated of the group. Her rules were rigid at first, and she has loosened. We can read back the rules she has formed, and some of them are ones we had never articulated ourselves.
06 · DELIVERY
GIL
Gil used to protect the wrong thing: he would keep the composition and lose the face. He now understands that a frame has a subject and everything else is negotiable — which sounds obvious, and took him four months.
